Dubai gets just a few days of rain every year and it becomes a momentous occasion. Radio stations bring out their romantic playlists across languages, social media posts of raindrops and wet roads jostle for attention and every one is smiling. What’s app groups remind everyone that it’s magical and encourage people to head away from the office for tea or coffee.
Cloud formations visit a city that is used to clear skies and there’s a wonderful nip in the air. There’s a sense of celebration because everyone knows there’s not too many days like this.
I wonder when friends and relatives from other parts of the world see our posts of raindrops and clouds, do they wonder as they look at their rain drenched windows, what the big deal is.
Hear are some wonderful moments from my camera yesterday as this day of blessing passed by during a dubai winter. And yes, the day was magical!
Here’s some pictures from the weekend of different locations in dubai. All taken on the iphone.
There’s a beautiful installation in Dubai mall. It’s a waterfall that cascades down 4 levels . Over the waterfall are floating statues of a diver.
As you stand and watch and see the water move below, you can feel the sensation of the dive and the exhilaration of the diver. The sound of falling water of course is magic to the soul!
I can stand and stare at the moment captured by this fascinating sculpture for ages.
I had dinner at Social house today with a client.
Social house is set by the fountain side in Dubai mall and its a place whose ambience and vibe i absolutely love.
Social House is large and spread into zones which are cut away from each other into cozy spaces. It has a cool and friendly, urban chic look which is accentuated with light wooden crate textures.
The fact that the outdoor area sits with a front seat view of the Dubai fountain makes that the favorite seating area at nights. It’s just magical when suddenly music snakes or way across the water body, the surface starts to glow and suddenly the water comes alive and does its dance. You are mesmerized into silence, watching the drama unfold with a smile even if you have seen it a hundred times before.
The service was amazing, friendly and quick. The food was great and has always been for me at Social House. I have loved the vibe as much when I have come by with the family and friends for weekend brunches.
I stayed back after the meeting today and sketched. Something about the place allowed me to be alone even in the crowd.
Some pics of Dubai in the downtown area near the worlds tallest tower, burj Khalifa. I love the blend of modernity and culture in the area. The architecture is inspired by the old world charm of Arabia and the Burj sits within this in its majestic and imposing form. The tower form is derived from a flower of the region and is perfect for the wind speeds for its height
